Opening Day Breaks Records!
Whoa! Kickball is here! After a disappointing rainout (or so says new haven parks and recreation) last weekend, New Haven’s Kickball league was off to a great opening day! There was a record turnout for new haven kickball: 9 teams, 160 players. Never before has East Rock Park seen so many ballers. Ranging in ages from 21 to well… a bit older. Coming as close as from down the block to as far as down 91. I’m impressed.

Word up from the Captains (The Captain’s Corner)
Balls Deep:
“I would have to say our victory was due to some solid fielding, and a lot of enthusiasm. Also, one of our team members is a robot, so that helped a lot too!”

Balls of Glory:
"Team Balls of Glory had a wonderful 1st game (even though we lost by a lot to Balls Deep). Eric Kershnar definitely wins MVP for Game #1 with 2 homeruns and multiple RKI (runs kicked in). We are a merged team so some of us are strangers but already there's a comraderie. We are proud for winning the award for "Team to stay the latest at Christopher Martins"!

Wrecking Balls:
"As for something for the newsletter you can put: Thanks for a great showing on Opening Day and a special shout-out to all the fashionistas on the team that wore their knee- high socks!"

Ultimate Ballz:
"Defense dominated the beginning of the game as both teams made some spectacular plays. The Abe Lincolns drew first blood, putting up 4 runs in one inning. Not to be out done, Ultimate Ballz answered right back in the bottom half when, after back to back singles, superstar lefty Justin Backorik knocked a ball deep, plating two runs. After another short single, game MVP Mark ‘Checks’ Tomkiewicz blasted a ball over everyone’s head for a home run and the lead. The rest of the game witnessed more great plays from both teams, with Ultimate Ballz securing the victory. Special shout outs to Brian Zeiner, who made an incredible run saving catch and Patrice Kurnath, who gets ‘catch of the game’ honors after using her elbow, knee and ankle to catch a bullet at third base."

Overheard…. (The Gossip Corner)

“We just named ourselves Team Awesome as a joke. Who knew we were actually awesome?”

“Quit hitting my daughter in the chest”

“And that team has a three-legged mascot. Hopefully its not a representation of how good the team is.”
